As part of this year’s festivities around the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Marion County America 250 Committee donated a commemorative flag to the city of Centralia at Monday night’s city council meeting. Committee co-chair Mark Decker said that in addition to the flag that has already been presented to Marion County itself, flags will be donated to each of the county’s municipalities.

The committee has planned a 1776 Dinner to take place on Friday, July 3 at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Salem, featuring guest speakers, informational booths, and reenactment presentations. More information on the group’s activities can be found on the Marion County Celebrates America 250 Facebook page.

In business at the council meeting, the council approved an addendum to the existing engineering services agreement with Curry and Associates for the construction of a new 12-inch waterline to Kaskaskia College.  The addendum reflects an increase in the cost of engineering services due to a slight increase in the scope of the project. The cost of engineering services has increased from $355,500 to $370,500.

City Manager Galen Mahle reported that Centralia has been approved for a Safe Routes to School Grant this year. The new grant will allow for the construction of between 800 and 1000 feet of ADA-compliant sidewalk heading north along Country Club Road. Mahle estimates the new sidewalk would extend to somewhere between Edgebrook and Gragg Street.
