Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says three Iuka Grade School Junior High Students who left school grounds Wednesday afternoon without authorization during an outdoor physical education class were later located safe and unharmed in a wooded area.

School officials immediately contacted the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Iuka Police Department after the students were observed running from the class. Cripps says law enforcement agencies responded promptly and initiated a coordinated search effort.

The Iuka Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Cripps says authorities are aware of misinformation circulating within the Iuka community regarding a potential threat to the school. At this time, there is no threat to students, staff, or school property. Reports suggesting the students were armed or posed a danger are unfounded. A thorough search confirmed that no weapons were involved.

During the incident, the students entered a heavily wooded rural area near the school, which presented several safety hazards. To expedite the search, aerial resources, including a drone and a helicopter, were deployed. These tools, commonly used by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office when needed, proved effective in quickly locating the students.

Iuka Grade School, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iuka Police Department want to reassure families that it is safe for students to attend school on Thursday. The safety and well-being of students and staff remains the highest priority.

Cripps extends his appreciation to all personnel and community members who assisted in Wednesday’s response.

Parents are encouraged to remind their children that law enforcement officers are here to help and protect, and they should never hesitate to approach an officer if they need assistance.
