The Salem Community High School Board has added refurbishing 44 hard-to-open interior and exterior doors around the cafeteria and front gymnasium doors to the projects for this summer.
The board on Monday night entered into a performance contracting agreement with Ameresco to oversee the $237,000 project.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the project is being added to a long list of summer improvements.
“The roof coating project that’s over the entire academic part including the business wing and the cafeterias,” Detering said. “Door placement hardware as well as patching, repairing, repainting, and rehanging of the doors. We’ve got the removal of the lower bleachers in B.E. Gum Gymnasium as well as the replacement of all six basketball goals, and that’s going to be in part because we’re going to finalize plans for a shot clock, because that’s going to be a requirement in the 26-27 basketball season.”
In other action, the board approved a June 2027 Washington DC trip for junior and senior students. Social Studies Teacher Ivy Balla is putting together the trip through a promotion company. Fund raising assistance will be provided for those who cannot afford the trip on their own. If the trip is successful, it would be offered every other year in the future.
Board members Mike McKinzie and Marla Tolliver were honored with the Established Award by the Illinois School Board Association. It is the first of three levels of service awards present to school board members.
The board acted on a number of personnel issues. The resignation of Lilly Risley as Consumer Science Teacher was accepted as she leaves to return to a similar job in her hometown of Robinson.
The board hired Ben Carril as guidance counselor and head boys’ soccer coach, Kailey Smith as mathematics teacher, Trevor Greene as special education teacher, Keely Smith as physical education teacher, and Amy Handegan and Jillin Bullard as co-dance team coaches.
