The Salem Grade School Board has received a $50,000 state matching school maintenance grant which will be utilized in the roof resurfacing project at Hawthorn School this summer.   Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says Omni Energy Partners has tested the roof to make sure spraying/foaming will be feature and the results show it will be.

The registration fee for transitional kindergarten will increase from $30 to $60.   The increase matches the program going from half-day to full-day.  The $30 technology fee charged in other grades will not be added because the class does not utilize Chromebooks the same as K-8 grades.

Foppe reported four staff will attend a weeklong training this summer on the Orton-Gillingham Reading Instruction/Intervention system.  The curriculum has been found effective with assisting struggling readers.  The training will be paid for with the district’s school improvement grant monies.

Foppe says the district will bid out health insurance.  They are working with Bushue human resources to seek bids that would be opened on April 13th.  The district has made extra payments the last two years to keep the Egyptian Trust health insurance program solvent.

First Year Assistant Principal Ben Teriet had his contract extended for another three years.

Head of Maintenance Mike Pugh has delayed his retirement from this June to June 30th, 2027.

The board employed Megan Lenzini as girls assistant track coach.  Jennings Barnfield was named head girls track coach, leaving his current position as assistant boys coach open.  Christina Wescher resigned as a paraprofessional.
