Centralia Police say they are seeking to arrest two suspects involved with a one-year-old girl getting a fentanyl pill she put into her mouth.
The girl is still recovering at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis.
Centralia Police in an update on the case say the girl and her mother were visiting a home in the 600 block of South Locust last Friday afternoon when her mother discovered her daughter chewing on something that she originally said was Tylenol.
Centralia City Firemen say the pill was out of her mouth and thrown away before they arrived on the scene. Firemen felt the girl was acting normal, but she was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for further examination.
Police Lieutenant Steve Whritenour says after the girl tested positive for having fentanyl in her system, she was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis for treatment. Eventually a family member confirmed the capsule she had in her mouth contained fentanyl. The pill has not been recovered.
A court hearing was held earlier this week to place the girl in the protective custody of the Illinois Department of Family Services when she is released from the hospital.
