A large collection of photographs put together by Historian Frank Brinkerhoff will be available for public viewing beginning this Saturday from nine to noon at the Salem Historical Museum.
Brinkerhoff says he began the collection in the 1960’s to show his eighth-grade history students what Salem used to look like.
“Some of you will remember there was the milk station on North Broadway,” Brinkerhoff said. “Marshall studio, Oscar Marshall took some very nice pictures of the second courthouse, the old jail, the old railroad depot, the churches, and a number of homes that are now gone. The kids really enjoyed looking at those, so I kept it up. That’s where it all started.
Brinkerhoff says the collection also includes a number of school class photos.
Historical Commission Member Myron Lloyd says they will be able to make copies of the photos and have a stand that can hold a photo if someone wants to copy it onto their phone. He notes not all the photos can be handled because of their age, but commission members will be available to assist.
