Some who live along the portion of Raccoon Lake near Raccoon Creek are concerned about guns being shot near their homes by hunters.

Raccoon Lake Association President Tom Hawkins told the association membership Thursday night the issue came up when some duck hunters maintained the land wasn’t in the city and they could hunt.

Hawkins says at issue is some land that does not list any ownership in Marion County records.

Centralia City Manager Galen Mahle, who was in attendance, says the city’s position is clear.

“There is no hunting on Raccoon Lake,” Mahle said. “There is no hunting in city limits. That is our stance on that, and we continue to try and communicate that to anybody who asks, and we’re certainly hopeful to be able to answer some of the questions that the association came up with in regards to land that is unknown as far as the ownership or anything like that, we want to try and get those answers, but anything that is city property, there is no hunting allowed on city property or in city limits.”

All hunting was banned on Raccoon Lake after the 2018-19 season.  While it is also banned on Lake Centralia, sometimes exceptions are made for land around the lake.
