Salem Township Hospital is reporting a surge of Type ‘A’ flu and COVID-19 cases since Christmas week and continuing into the New Year.

Chief Nursing Officer Lisa Ambuehl reports in December there were 17 COVID cases, with three admissions.  There were 37 type ‘A’ flu cases, with one admission.  There were 18 type ‘B’ or less serious flu cases.  In the first few days of January, an additional four COVID cases were recorded along with nine influenza cases, two of which required admittance.

Ambuehl says the COVID cases appear to be fairly mild, but are a big concern to those with other respiratory issues.   She notes while the flu vaccine this year may not include the most serious strain, it is expected to keep the severity of the cases down.

SSM Health has reported a slight increase in respiratory illness among inpatients in its Southern Illinois hospital, but overall numbers still remain relatively low.  There are currently six patients hospitalized for influenza and one for COVID-19.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports influenza statewide at very high levels, with COVID-19 rates climbing to ‘moderate levels’.   Public Health Director Sameer Vohra says simple steps like covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands regularly, staying home when sick if you are able, and improving ventilation are also critical to preventing further spread.

The state reports only 22-percent of Illinoisans have received their flu shot this season, while only 6.8 percent have received COVID-19 immunizations.
