A Flora man has been sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison in connection with an altercation that led to three stabbings last December at the Oyo/Roadway Inn on North Olive Road in Flora.
Shane Highsmith was sentenced to 13 years for attempted murder, and three and four years for aggravated battery for the other two stabbings. The time will all be served consecutively.
Highsmith was reportedly staying at the motel when the altercation occurred. One of the victims was stabbed 13 times and transferred by medical helicopter to an Evansville, Indiana hospital. Another victim was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana. Clay County State’s Attorney Andrew Koester says all three
victims have since recovered and been released from the hospital.
Koester thanked Flora Police for the investigation and providing potentially lifesaving first aid and to Illinois State Police Division of Forensic Services and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department that assisted in the investigation.
