The idea of Steve Smith of Salem to send gift packs to soldiers overseas began 20 years ago when his son and other members of the Salem National Guard had been sent overseas.

He continued the tradition after the guard’s return and now sends packages to soldiers at overseas posts each year.  Smith says, once again, 500 gift packs are going out this year.

“They’ve got a lot of things in them,” Smith said. “Toothbrush kits, gummies and cookies. A Gideon Bible, a salvation track, and some other information there. There’s candy of different kinds and granola bars. For the last twenty years, I’ve sent mostly the same things. They seem to enjoy it. The ones we send to are kids, and we all know kids like to eat a certain amount of junk food. I think what they like the most is contact from home.”

Smith says he’s been told by some recipients, “It’s not what you send, but that you didn’t forget me.”

Smith notes the program is kept alive by a lot of good volunteers and donations from the business community and individuals.  Those who would like to help the on-going effort can mail donations to Smith at 132 Donoho Drive in Salem.   You can also call him for more information at 618-322-6736.
