The Jolliff Family’s float, ‘Trolls,’ won the coveted Harley Queen Trophy, and the Timmons Family’s entry, ‘Carnival of Frights, ‘ won the Grand Marshals trophy in the 98th Halloween Parade held Saturday night. The Alternative Learning Academy’s entry, ‘Showtime at the ALA,’ won the George Borum Award for most closely following the theme and first in the school division. Competition was stiff, as the more than 100-unit parade included 37 floats.
Other float winners included Macz Funeral Homes ‘Frights, Lights, and Delights, ‘ which featured a two-story Gingerbread home and took first place in commercial. Swan Incorporated’s entry, ‘Monster Quack Band,’ was second.
In the church division, Calumet Street Christian Church’s entry, ‘Electric Scream Nineties Dream,’ took first place, and the Sandoval Community Church’s entry, ‘Jesus is the Light of the World,’ was second.
In the school division, Sandoval High School FFA’s entry, ‘FFA with Frights and Lights,’ was second behind the Alternative Learning Center.
in the civic division, ABATE of Illinois was first with their float ‘Ice Cream, You Scream Haunted Carnival’ and Centralia Firefighters Association Local 618 was second with ‘Zombie Fire Crew’.
The Huff, Jacobs, Allgood and Lund families took first in the family division with their entry ‘Rockin Frights and Glaring Delights.
In the Marching Competition, the Royal Pink Dolls was first and Studio 50 was second.
In the band competition, the combined Mt. Vernon High School and Casey Junior High took first place, and Sandoval Junior/Senior High School second in the high school division. Sandoval won outstanding auxiliary, while Mt. Vernon High School/Casey Junior High won outstanding drum line and drum major. Iuka Grade was first and Franklin Park was second in the grade school division. Iuka won the outstanding auxiliary, and Franklin Park won the exceptional drum line.
