Illinois lawmakers are sending emergency housing assistance legislation to the Governor’s desk.

Both the House and Senate have now passed the bill, which creates a program for doling out over a billion dollars in Federal Rental Assistance to help those affected during the pandemic.  Representative Delia Ramirez of Chicago sponsored the measure.

“We will make sure that it gets to all the people that need it.  Not just some people.  But people that owe $10,0o0 in rent will be able to get the assistance.  That landlords can help apply for the assistance.  That we make sure that people in risk of homeliness that they will be to the best extent prioritized and we will make sure they get that rent relief as quickly as possible.”

Senator Omar Aquino of Chicago says it also places a stay on foreclosures through next month.

“This bill essentially is trying to keep people in the state of Illinois in their home no matter if they rent or own their home and are trying to pay their mortgage.”

The measure also seals eviction records until July 31st of 2022.  It’s now up to the Governor to sign the bill into law.
