The driver of a van that crashed on East Liberty Road east of Mt. Vernon fled from the scene Saturday night, leaving five passengers behind.
Jefferson Fire reports that four of the five juvenile passengers were taken to an area hospital for injury treatment.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the cause of the crash. It appears the vehicle ran off into the roadside ditch, hit a culvert or other object, and came back onto the roadway, where it stopped. The van received heavy front-end damage.
The crash was reported at 9:40 Saturday night.
