Marion County Relay for Life has been set for September 27th at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

One of the organizers, Michelle Murphy, says it’s a special year for the event.

“It is the 40th anniversary of Relay, and our theme in Marion County is ‘Cheers to 40 years.’”

Sheila Mulvany says the goal this year has been set at $50,000 which is actually below the surprising high total for last year that reached $64,000 by the end of the year.   She reports so far this year, $11,775 has been raised towards the goal.

“We currently have ten teams, and our goal is to have fifteen. Last year, I think we ended up with fourteen, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we’ll get that many. We’re looking for 75 survivors and we’re about halfway there. We encourage survivors to sign up either on our website or by calling ACS. That information is on our Facebook page, Relay for Life of Marion County Illinois.”

Mulvany says survivors now need to order their t-shirts ahead of time so they can wear them the day of the relay.   None will be available during the survivor reception that will kick off the event at four pm on September 27th.

The opening ceremony and survivor lap follows at five pm.  Music by Joel Young is scheduled at 5:30, the Luminaria Ceremony at seven, and the closing ceremony at eight.
