A 22-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested on multiple weapons charges following an investigation into a late Sunday morning traffic crash and gunshots fired in the area of South 34th Street and Peach Street.
Amil Ganaway was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm with revoked FOID status.
Upon arrival at the scene, Mt. Vernon Police found a vehicle involved in an accident and evidence of a shooting. A short time later the other vehicle involved in the accident and shooting was located in the 600 block of Strawberry. There were two people in the car. One victim refused treatment and the other was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Mt. Vernon Fire and Litton’s Ambulance responded to help the victims. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted Mt. Vernon Officers with scene security.
An investigation by Mt. Vernon Police Detectives led to a search warrant for Ganaway’s apartment. He was later located in Centralia and transported back to the Mt. Vernon Police Department.
Mt. Vernon Police say this was not a random act of gun violence and was a targeted incident.
