The Illinois Senate has sent a massive health care reform bill to the Governor’s desk.

The measure aims to address several disparities and increase equity when it comes to access to medical care.  It addresses issues like maternal and infant mortality rates, hospital closings and mental health and substance abuse.

Chicago Senator Mattie Hunter says the reforms were a long time coming, and that more may follow.

We have not reformed the health care system in this state for about 11 years. There have been a number of changes that have occurred in this period.  So this is a beginning,” said Hunter.

The measure is the fourth pillar of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ agenda and now awaits the Governor’s signature.
