An 86-year-old St. Elmo woman was killed in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 at milepost 91 in Effingham County late Friday morning.

State Police identify the victim as Evadine Goers.   She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Goers was a passenger in a van driven by her 85-year-old husband Eugene Goers of St. Elmo that was traveling westbound on I-70 when he failed to slow for traffic in front of him and started a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash.

Goers struck the rear of an SUV driven by 55-year-old Janet Bushue of Altamont, pushing it into a car driven by 27-year-old Jesus Gomez-Lara of Indianapolis, Indiana, pushing it into an SUV driven by 40-year-old Carrie Smith of Tipp City, Ohio.

Eugene Goers and Bushue were both transported by ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries.  Gomez-Lara and Smith along with a passenger in the Gomez-Lara car all refused medical attention.

Eugene Goers was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.   Gomez-Lara was ticketed for driving while license suspended.

The crash occurred at 11:04 Friday morning.
