An overturned semi in the construction zone of I-57 at the south split from I-64 south of Mt. Vernon brought traffic to a crawl for eight hours Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Jefferson Fire officials say the overturned trailer blocked both open southbound lanes forcing traffic to use the shoulder of the highway.

The driver of the truck declined hospital treatment.

The semi was carrying small beads that would be a hazardous material if they were not contained.  Fortunately, they were confined to the truck which had to be carefully unloaded before it could be moved.

Jefferson Fire was first notified of the crash at 6:42 Sunday night.  The roadway was not cleared until three am.
