Fire caused heavy damage to a rural Mt. Vernon mobile home Wednesday afternoon.

Jefferson Fire officials say the fire was at the Michelle Johnson residence at 14,862 McCulley Lane.    She was home, but didn’t realize the mobile home was on fire until several people approached the home and yelled at her that it was on fire.

The fire began on an exterior wall and stayed on the roofline.   Firemen had to remove three-fourths of the ceiling to get to the fire which never spread to the living area.  However, there was substantial smoke damage throughout the home.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.  The State Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate.

The new mobile home was installed less than a month.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with immediate needs as a result of the fire.

The fire call came in at 1:08 Wednesday afternoon.  Firemen remained on the scene for about three hours.

Mt. Vernon, Bluford, Wayne City and Woodlawn provided mutual aid on the scene.  Salem and Waltonville covered the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.
