2024 10/12 – Betty Moses-Grotts

Betty Moses-Grotts, 78, of Pana, formerly of Centralia, passed away, on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born to Alvin Schaeffer and Hilda (Gerstkemper) Huge in Centralia, Illinois. She married Frank Moses on August 28, 1965, and he preceded her in death. She married Bob Grotts on May 5, 1996, and he survives her in Pana, IL.

She is survived by: Brothers, Wayne Schaeffer (Nancy), and Rodney Schaeffer (Kris), Sisters Barbara Castellari, and Brenda Spencer (Bob), and a half-sister, Stacy Garren (Bryan). Also surviving is her son, the joy of her life, Scott Moses, who lives in Centralia Illinois. Brother in law Sam Grotts (Sue), Brother in law James Grotts, Step-son, Rob Grotts (Tammy), Step-daughters, Reba Trelz (Rick), Becky Miller (Kent), and Paula Broux (Jeff); Grandchildren, Kyle Miller, Chad Miller, Cory Miller, Ryan Trelz (Allison), Kayla Beyers (Andrew), Cody McLaughlin (Grace), Megan Meachum (Cody), Ashley Bauer (Rich), Jason Grotts (Rachael), fourteen great-grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Iva McNeely, of Pana, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Frank Moses, a brother, Don Schaeffer, and a niece, Sara Tripp. Nephews and Nieces Chad and Julie Schaeffer, Angie Knapp, Jeff Castellari, Jason Castellari and wife Selsa, Stacy and husband Jeff.

Betty loved doing home decorating and seasonal decorating as well as chalk painting. Bob and Betty went to Florida for over 10 years and made several good friends.

Betty was a retired bookkeeper and a self-employed hairdresser. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pana, IL. Betty Was sick for over 5 years, starting with COVID-19, and was in ICU and almost did not make it out of ICU after surviving she has had long hauler COVID-19 and has not been well, we believe that COVID-19 was a big contributor to the lung cancer. We talked to the surgeon and was told she was too weak to survive the surgery and that chemo or immune therapy would only make her worse. The only thing that could be done was radiation treatments, but the cancer came back.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Sandoval, IL. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Quad County Hospice in Pana, IL and will be accepted at Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home, 235 N.
