Jefferson Fire Protection District reports six people were injured in a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on northbound I-57 near the Dix exit.
Initial information from State Police indicated a semi-truck was unable to stop in time for traffic that had slowed entering the construction zone. The semi first struck a pickup truck towing a boat trailer forcing the pickup into a stopped semi in front of it. The semi that caused the crash and the pickup truck became engulfed in flames. The other semi and a car at the crash scene were both able to be driven away before catching fire.
State Police say one driver was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries. Five others were taken to Mt. Vernon area hospitals for treatment of injuries.
Kell Firemen provided mutual aid assistance at the fire scene by bringing a water tender for transport of water from the Raccoon Water Tower.
The crash occurred at 2:04 Sunday afternoon. The left lane was reopened to traffic about two hours later and the right lane remained closed until 11:41 Sunday night.
The names of those involved have not been released at the present time.
