The Centralia City Council will be asked to pass a resolution at Monday night’s meeting to begin the process of replacing a troublesome 12 inch water line that has led to the loss of water at Kaskaskia College and the Centralia Correctional Center.
The council will be asked to approve an agreement with Curry and Associates to design and permit a new 12 inch water line from the intersection of Jolliff Bridge Road at Illinois Route 161 to the 12 inch transmission main at the Kaskaskia College water tower. The estimated cost of Phase 1 of the work is $280,000. A second phase to oversee construction would cost an additional $75,500.
City Manager Kory Smith says emergency repairs have been made to the line after multiple occasions in the past two months that have caused the closure of the school and no water available to the prison. The city has met with leaders of Kaskaskia College, the Centralia Correctional Facility and State Representatives to discuss the recent repairs, possible construction plans and funding opportunities. The council will also be asked to pay $23,121 incurred from Utility Pipe Supplies for pipe needed for emergency repairs.
The council will also be asked to waive the speed limit on Raccoon Lake for participants in the 2024 boat races.
The meeting begins at six Monday night at Centralia City Hall.
