The Iuka Fire Department has moved into their new station.
The station has eight bays to house each of the district’s trucks comfortably and all with easy access to the roads to leave the firehouse.
The new 8,000 square foot $750,000 building is just a block away from the old station.
Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says their main firehouse was developing major structural problems and was too small.
“First thing trustees wanted to get equipment lined up and we upgraded two tankers and one pumper in the last 2.5 years, paid for them and had some money left over trying to save some money and then we had to borrow a little bit but we got our payments plenty low enough that we can make them and still have plenty of operating money every year.”
Eagan says in addition to room for all trucks, there is plenty of other space as well.
“Couple storage rooms in here, one out in the bay. Two offices and a nice big kitchen and meeting room.”
Eagan says the original fire station that has served the department for 36 years will be torn down. The building was converted from its original use as a fertilizer factory. The second building constructed in 2001 will be maintained as a training center.
Johannes Construction of Walnut Hill was general contractor on the building, with work getting underway in June. The new facility also includes a new radio tower and radio equipment.
The department backed in the equipment into the new building on Saturday to complete the move.
