Marion County Treasurer Gary Purcell says enrollment is now underway for those who would like to pay their property taxes for tax year 2020 due in 2021 in nine monthly payments instead of the two lump sums this summer.
Purcell says the plan is optional and there is no charge to participate.
Anyone is eligible to participate as long as you don’t have delinquent taxes due. If you enrolled last year, there is no need to sign up again unless you would like to add or remove a property from the program. The signup deadline is January 8th.
Purcell says if your property taxes are es-crowed by a financial institution there is no need to sign up for this program.
The nine monthly payments will be based on the 2019 Real Estate Tax on your property.
After you have completed the application process, you will be mailed a letter confirming your participation in the Prepayment Plan program as well as instructions for making your payments.
Monthly payments will be due by the 25th of each month. Payments will begin on January 25th. Payments must be postmarked on or before the 25th.
Financial institutions will not accept payments in the prepayment plan, nor will you be able to make the prepayment plan payments on the internet or by credit card. Payment must be made by mail or at the courthouse or in the drop box located on the west side of the courthouse.
If you wish to sign up for the prepayment plan, applications are available in the treasurer’s office from eight to four Monday through Friday. You may also call 618-548-3858 for assistance.
