The Marion County Board has approved a long-overdue contract with the Laborers Union that will include back pay for union members dating back three years.

The action was among the first for the newly seated Marion County Board but had been worked out by the old board.   Vice-Chair Dr. Creighton Engel announced the settlement will provide a total of $43,160 in back pay in 2018, $41,080 in back pay in 2019, and $39,520 in back pay for the just-completed 2020 fiscal year.   The one-dollar an hour pay increase for the coming year will cost the county an additional $39,520.

The contract covers employees in the county clerk, county treasurer, supervisor of assessments offices as well as cooks and janitors at the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

The board also approved a $2.1-million tax levy that is 3.4-percent more than was collected last year to allow the county to collect revenue on new construction and the cost of living increase provided in tax caps.

The board approved the purchase of a new pickup truck from Max Dye, Inc for the animal control officer at a cost of $27,079.

The board approved the traditional $50 gift certificate for full-time employees and $25 for part-time employees that is the profit from vending machines and non-taxpayer dollars.   While Board Chair Debbie Smith assured the board there was plenty of money to cover the gifts, board member Erwin Hahn questioned some of the money included and cast the only no vote.

In other action, the board presented outgoing Circuit Clerk Ronda Yates, State’s Attorney Bill Milner, and Board Members Gary Joe Sanders and Debbie Young with plaques of appreciation.
