The Salem City Council has approved the sale of 16 acres in the Westside Industrial Park for a sports complex.

The Southern Illinois All-Stars headed by Christopher Shaw of Carlyle submitted a sealed bid through Somer Real Estate in Salem to pay $27,000 for the 16-acre tract of land that lies between Howell Paving and the Vermillion Village Apartment Complex.

City Manager Rex Barbee explained the bid.

“It is for the Southern All Stars which is a training facility they are looking to erect a 100 foot by 100-foot building and use that for sports training.  It’s an indoor training facility along with outdoor training facilities as well.”

Barbee says he feels this is a good use for the property.

“I think it will fit within the scope of the Industrial Park.  That tract we are looking at with minimal flat area would work good for this more so than industrial type business.”

The purchase is contingent upon the Southern Illinois All-Stars obtaining financing.
