A Mt. Vernon attorney has been sworn in as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court.
David Overstreet was elected to represent the Southern Illinois area covered by the 5th District Appellate Court in the November election. He had been serving as an Appellate Justice and before that a Circuit Court Judge.
Chief Justice Anne Burke welcomed Overstreet to the high court, noting he would be the 119th Justice in the history of the court.
“Justice Overstreet if past achievements are any indication of future success I know you will serve the Supreme Court with the uncompromising sense of duty and commitment which have been the hallmark of your entire legal career. You brought excellence to the legal community as an appellate jurist and served with distinction on the Illinois Judicial Conference and the Illinois Judicial College.”
Burke noted his work on the committee to improve the courts will be invaluable to him and the court.
Overstreet was sworn in by Judge Lloyd Karmeier who he was replacing on the Supreme Court.
“I’m going to work tirelessly to improve the judiciary and legal system for all the citizens for Illinois. I’m going to remember I’m a public servant and will treat people right just like I learned from my mom and my dad.”
Overstreet also remembers a sign hanging up at the football field of his Alma Mater, the University of Tennessee, reminding the players to give all to Tennessee today.
“I will give my all for Illinois today and every day that I have the privilege of being an Illinois Supreme Court Justice.”
Overstreet thanked Judge Karmeier for his exceptional ability on the bench and for his appointments that led up to his election to the Supreme Court.
