Centralia Police have arrested two men when breaking up a burglary in progress early Wednesday morning at the Plumbers and Pipefitters building on South Chestnut Street.
44-year-old Scott Hamburg of Jefferson Street in Wamac and 52-year-old Douglas Johnson of West 7th in Centralia were taken into custody for burglary, criminal damage to property, and possession of burglary tools.
Police were first notified by a passerby of someone being in the building. When the first officer arrived he saw a person inside running down the hallway. Another officer found a door pried open. After establishing a perimeter and calling a canine unit to the scene, those inside were ordered to come out or the canine would be released.
At that point, Hamburg surrendered. He told police he was alone, but a search of the building that followed found Johnson still inside.
Both were taken to the Marion County Jail to await a decision on formal charges.
The call reporting the break-in was received at 12:44 on Wednesday morning.
