Salem Community High School Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says this summer will be another big year for renovation work.

As the school year concludes this week, Detering says work is starting on $1.9-million in improvements.

“The major project that we have is the hallway and locker renovation.  We are moving the floor tiles in all three hallways and floors on the academic end as well as the business wing.  They are going to get all new VCT flooring. The hallways, doors and frames are all going to be painted.  All the stair treads in all the stair wells will be replaced.  We also have the renovation of the student services area to lay down carpet and new drywall in order to upgrade it.”

Other work is planned in the weight room.

“We are renovating the entire weight room.  Taking out old furnace equipment and vents and taking out the old ceiling tiles that have been there since the building was built.”

The board also reviewed its tentative budget for the fiscal year ending June 30th.  Detering reports there will be an overall $582,282 deficit due to $1,000,000 being spent out of surplus funds for the cafeteria project last summer.   He says an expected deficit in the education fund was turned around with a projected $60,000 deficit now showing a $40,000 positive.  Detering anticipates about $9-million in reserves at the end of the fiscal year.

A hearing on the budget will be held at the start of the next school board meeting which is set to start at seven Monday night, June 24th.

In personnel action, the board named Dylan Courty as assistant boys basketball coach, Marissa Wooters as dance team coach, and Abby Williams as girls tennis coach.
