The Salem Wildcats won their final baseball tune up before Thursday’s regional opener as they beat Mount Vernon on the road 6-1.
The big knock for the Cats coming from Colton Shelton who hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning to give Salem a 5-1 lead. They would add an insurance run in the 7th to win 6-1. It’s the first win over the Rams in 10 years for the Wildcats. Salem outhit the Rams 10-2.
Gavin Zimmermann, Josh Powless, Ryan Detering and Jalen Inlow added doubles. Powless and Detering had RBI. The Cats regular season ends at 16-18 and they will open up regional play Thursday with a game against Mattoon.
The 3a regional’s opened yesterday. Herrin won on the road beating Carbondale 5-3, Charleston beat visiting Olney 12-2 and East St Louis 14-4 over Cahokia.
