One driver was injured in an early Sunday morning crash at Main and Broadway in Salem that ended with a street light pole at the corner being struck and knocked into the intersection.
Salem Police say the crash occurred when a car driven by 25-year-old Vinay Karri of Charleston ran a red light while southbound on Broadway and hit the passenger side of an eastbound car driven by a 16-year-old female juvenile from Salem going east on Main Street. After impact, the juvenile’s car ran into the street light pole on Sweney Corner knocking it into the eastbound lanes of Main Street.
Salem Police say the juvenile was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Karri was not hurt. He was ticketed for disobeying a traffic control device.
The crash occurred at 12:04 Sunday morning.
It was a bad evening for the 16-year-old who had been involved in a minor traffic crash in the Murphy Gas parking lot just over an hour earlier. She was also the not at fault driver in that collision when her front bumper was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old female juvenile from Iuka.
Salem Police say she was able to drive her car home with the bumper damage, but then had taken her dad’s car until repairs could be made. She was driving that car at the time of the second crash.
