The AMC Classic Movie Theater in the Fairview Shopping Center in Centralia has closed permanently.
A sign was hung on the door making the announcement and hoping to see its patrons at its nearest location in Mt. Vernon giving indication that theater would remain open.
A request for comment from AMC on the closure so far has gone unanswered.
Centralia City Manager Lowell Crow was able to confirm the closing through the leasing agent for the Fairview Shopping Center that AMC has closed. They received notification Tuesday morning. The theater most recently had been showing classic films.
Crow notes the Centralia location isn’t alone in facing closure as the theater industry struggles with closures and reduced attendance due to COVID-19.
S and P Global last month reduced its credit rating on AMC Entertainment due to the high rate of cash burn which they believe will result in the company running out of liquidity within six months without raising additional capital which is viewed as unlikely.
Crow said the shopping center agent is hoping new businesses can be located for Fairview Shopping Center after the pandemic. They noted to Crow everything is tough to replace. A company reportedly had been interested in taking the Gordman’s store location, but that business has now followed Gordman’s into bankruptcy.
