There will be no basketball at Patoka School until the Illinois Department of Public Health Guidelines say it can be played.
Superintendent David Radamacher says Coach Joey Eddy appeared before the school board Thursday night for discussion on the topic. Radamacher says Eddy understood the board’s decision, but feels bad for the team’s seniors and would still like to do something for them.
While the Illinois High School Association has issued guidelines where sports could be played, the Governor has warned against it. Radamacher notes their earlier decision to go full remote at the high school was based on a COVID-19 case that began on the basketball team during a no-contact practice that resulted in a number of players being quarantined.
Patoka High School has returned to in-school learning and so far Radamacher says their numbers look good to stay in school. Patoka Grade and Junior High School so far have avoided going to full remote due to COVID-19.
The school board approved a tentative property tax levy that is 5.62-percent higher than this year’s tax collections. Since the increase is above five-percent, it will require a truth in taxation hearing at the December 17th school board meeting. Radamacher says the increase is the result of new commercial growth and an increase in farmland assessments. He reports the district’s actual tax rate is expected to go down six cents to $4.13 per $100 assessed valuation.
