SCHS students bring canned goods to the gym during last year’s canned food drive. This year’s drive will be monetary donations online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The Salem High School Student Council will still hold their annual canned food drive, but it will look different this year due to restrictions from COVID-19 precautions.
Student Council President Hadden Lybarger says since students will not be able to bring in canned goods and there are no homerooms this year that normally compete, the drive will go virtual.
“We have set up a way to donate online. If you go to salemhigh.com on the homepage there will be a place to donate for students, families, anyone who wants to donate, businesses, etc…”
Donations can also be made at the front office of SCHS and at People’s State Bank.
Lybarger says a fundraising goal has been set.
“Even though on a usual year we would collect 20-30,000 cans for our drive since it’s a much different year than usual, we have set a goal for $10,000 in donations. The Food Pantry really depends on us.”
Lybarger is hoping the business community and individuals will rally around the online drive and donate to make sure the Food Pantry has an adequate supply of food for the holidays and into next year.
