There Salem organizations will combine efforts again this year to provide a Community Thanksgiving Dinner in both Salem and Centralia.

The free dinner for everyone will take place in Salem from ten to four on Saturday. One of the organizers, Chris Watkins, says the event will be held at the Salem Community Activity Center. But because of COVID-19, the dinner will be different this year.

“Everything is going to be drive up.  We aren’t going to have anyone come and sit because of that safety is our top priority and then feeding people is our 2nd priority but we are going to make sure people are safe.”

Watkins says they will be asking everyone going through the line if they are okay or need anything else. He reports once again this year blankets will be available to those in need.

“Blankets are a little low.  Boxes are still out there at Dollar General and drop them off at Treasure Creek also.  If you have some extra blankets or can go out and buy some that would be great.”

There will be deliveries available for those who cannot pick up meals. You can call 335-1021 or 214-3376. Over 800 delivery requests have already been made.

Watkins says the 4th annual dinner is once again sponsored by the Marion County YMCA, Saved with Amazing Grace and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He says the meal costs between $1500 and $2,000 to put one. Watkins says they are very appreciative of the Salem Police Department FOP for a $500 donation.

Another 500 meals will be prepared at the Salem Apostolic Church that will be delivered to the Centralia Community Youth Center on East Rexford. Director Herb Williams says meals will be handed out beginning at one pm for as long as they last. He reports there will be limited seating inside at socially distanced tables. You can also call the youth center for delivery in Centralia at 532-6530.

Watkins estimates 20 to 30 volunteers will help prepare and distribute the dinner.
