The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reports it is not clear why a 28-year-old Wayne City area man was standing next to the railroad tracks when clipped by a passing train late Friday night.
The incident occurred in a remote area of Romine Township in far southeast Marion County closest to the Meador and Kell Road intersection along the Canadian National Railroad tracks.
The train crew reported a person standing along the tracks that appeared to be blown off or knocked off of the tracks. Several of the man’s friends who were with him also called 911 to report the incident. The man’s name has not been released.
The investigation indicated the man apparently was clipped by the passing train and knocked down an embankment where he was found unconscious. He was moved to a United Medical Response Ambulance with assistance by the Orchardville Fire Department.
The man was first taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. He was later airlifted to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment.
The case was first reported at 11:17 Friday night. The Canadian National Railroad Police have joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in investigating the incident.
