The Salem Police Department has announced approximately 45 bicycles currently in their possession will be given away on Saturday, May 4th.
The bicycles were never registered with the police department nor has anyone who has reported a bicycle stolen or missing given a physical description or serial number that matched any of the bikes in the police department’s possession. There are bicycles in good or fair shape, some need minor repair, and a few would likely only be good for parts.
The bicycle giveaway will be held from nine to noon on Saturday, May 4th in the police department parking lot at 201 South Rotan. Bikes will be given away on a first come, first serve basis and the event will end when all bikes are given away or at noon, whichever comes first.
The police department is releasing the information on the giveaway now to give anyone who has a bicycle missing to claim ownership. Proof of ownership will require, at minimum, a physical description of the bicycle and an approximate date of when it was stolen or noticed missing. If a serial number can be provided, that would serve as the best proof of ownership. Considering this notice, and the length of time the police department has been in possession of these bicycles, claims of ownership after the bicycle giveaway event will not be accepted.
Donations to Salem Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #333 for the Shop with a Cop program will be accepted at the event. Donations are not required to obtain a bicycle.
