The Central City Village Board has approved new rules regarding the placement of flowers and other items in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.
According to the new rules, which go into effect May 1, flowers are permitted at any time in approved vases, on the memorial only. Artificial flowers are permitted on the Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Christmas holidays, and must be removed within five days after the holiday. Artificial flowers are also permitted during the non-mowing season, from October 1 to April 1, as are shepherd’s hooks. Grave blankets will be removed in February, and Christmas flowers will be removed by March 21, according to village officials.
Regarding upright monuments, flowers in vases and saddles will only be removed if they become unsightly or are out of season. The cemetery regulations also prohibit trinkets, ornaments, figurines, statues, and wind chimes from being placed on any grave or lot, or in any tree, at any time.
In other action, the board voted to accept a perpetual communications easement agreement with SBA Communications regarding village property on which SBA operates a cellular tower. The village will continue to own the land where the tower sits. Under the agreement, SBA will pay a $145,000 lump sum to the village. SBA had previously been paying Central City $690 each month. In February, the board voted against accepting a $145,000 lump sum and instead sought $175,000 from SBA; however, the company rejected the higher offer.
The Central City Board also approved scheduling the city-wide yard sale for Friday, June 7, and Saturday, June 8. The city-wide cleanup has been scheduled for the week of June 10 through June 14.
Trustees also voted to accept a bid of $4,500, submitted by Eric Mathis, for property located at 315 East Green Street. The board also approved an ordinance increasing sewer fees by 5 percent, effective immediately.
