Richard E. Sampson, age 82 of Salem, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Richard was born on April 4, 1941, in Iuka, the son of Orville and Lizzy (McDonald) Sampson.
Richard was the beloved and spoiled baby brother of seven older siblings, and they continued to love and spoil him throughout his life. He joined the United States Army at the age of 16 and gave four years of service to our country. He met and married Janet Susan Troy, and to this marriage, there were four children born.
Surviving are his three daughters, Patricia Sampson of Aurora, Marylee Deeter of Joliet, and Janet Rande and husband Brian of Joliet; grandchildren, Emilee LeDuc and husband Zach, Colin Deeter and wife Erika, Riley Deeter and wife Maddie, Brenna Fennewald and husband Jeremy, Quinn Rande, and Camden Rande; one sister, Anna Snow of Iuka; a special niece and nephew, Anna Jewel Bumgarner of Salem and Marvin “Ed” Bumgarner of Salem; and several other nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter; former wife, Janet Sampson; and six siblings, Ruby Cox, Coy Sampson, Francis Cripps, Jack Sampson, Della Bumgarner, and Dorothy Bumgarner.
Richard began work at Stateville Prison as a guard, on horseback. He then went on to work for Kerr Glass which later became Ball Glass, after employment, he moved back to Salem to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, tinkering in his garage, pool, bowling, playing fast-pitch softball, frying turkeys, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Funeral Services for Richard E. Sampson will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Iuka Cemetery with Military rites by the Salem American Legion. Memorials can be made to Heartland Regional Medical Center and can be left at Crouse Funeral Home.
