The Salem Community High School Board held a public hearing Monday night on its amended budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30th.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering is pleased with how the year has turned out financially.
“One of the things we are most proud of is that it’s another budget that is balanced and has a surplus in our four major operating funds. But being able to do that while still completing all the projects that we have going on. We are cash flowing some. Last summer’s projects we sold bonds for, this 2.5 million dollar kitchen project we are cash flowing. That is from fiscal responsibilities from the board and saving money and continuing to make upgrades.”
Detering says the surplus in the four major funds totals $509,746. That compares to the deficit budget the board adopted at the beginning of the year.
The board approved a $25,250 bid from AALCO Athletic Equipment for the purchase of a new softball backstop. An $18,900 bid was approved to install the backstop to Sports Con. The school board is moving forward with the improvements at Tulley Park now that the city has given SCHS a new ten-year lease to use the field.
The board purchased a $78,918 14-passenger bus from Southern Bus Mobility.
In personnel action, the board promoted Melinda Alvis to assistant bookkeeper/human resources secretary, hired Kristin Jarrett as student services secretary, and Mike Pappas as an assistant cross country coach. Jessie Knapp was reappointed as crisis class supervisor and permanent substitute teacher.
