Salem Police say one tobacco retailer sold to a minor during the latest compliance check.
The Circle K Shell on West Main was the only one of 14 tobacco retailers checked that sold to a minor. Clerk Candice Sauter of Salem was issued a notice to appear in court for the violation of the city ordinance Sale of Tobacco to a Minor.
The compliance checks are part of a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s ‘Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here’ Tobacco Enforcement Program. The police department also educated tobacco retailers on minimum age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of their customers while conducting compliance checks of area tobacco retailers.
