The Salem Soccer Association took five teams down to Marion this weekend to compete with 59 teams for divisional championships in their annual Whirlwind Tournament.
The 5-8 Lady Bobcats were champions in the 7th and 8th grade girls division. The Lady Bobcats are coached by Tom Petrillo, CJ Johnson, Matt Stanford, and Kyle Gansauer. The girls scored 9 goals and only allowed 1 the entire day. Emily Guzman led the team with 5 goals scored for the weekend.
Our 3rd and 4th grade girls also came away with hardware for the weekend, fighting against tough team and weather delays for a spot in their divisional championship game. Falling 2-3 to a tough Harrisburg team in double overtime was good for second place for the weekend. Top scorer of the weekend was Laney Kuhns with 9 goals. The team is coached by Chadd Nix, Matt Stanford, and Bob Morris.
The SSA brought a record number of teams to this tournament, with a 1st and 2nd grade girls, 1st and 2nd grade boys, and 3rd and 4th grade coed team traveling for their first tournament together with many first-time soccer players in the young groups. Although coming home with no medals to show, each team showed improvement throughout the weekend and earned some hard fought points in their divisions through goals scored.
