Salem baseball and softball win; Odin softball remains 4-0

High School Baseball:
The Salem Wildcats took advantage of a 2-out 3-run home run in the first inning off the bat of Josh Powless as they won their home opener over Charleston 7-1 despite only having 2 hits on the day.  Salem led 4-0 heading into the 5th inning when they put runners on.  Then a Keaton Gullion stolen base turned into a run from 3rd base to give Salem their final run of the game.  Griffin Day had the other Salem single.  He was also really good on the mound allowing just 4 hits in 6 innings with 1 earned run.  Noah Nix worked a 1-2-3 seventh to give Salem their first win of the year.  They are 1-2 as they are scheduled to play at Centralia this afternoon.
The Salem JV erased an early 2-0 deficit with 4 runs in the 3rd and 4 more in the 4th to win 9-3.  Cooper Lobek had 3 hits, Aden Bass drove in 2 runs with RBI also from Deytin Parker, Rhett Detering and Colten Shelton.  Rhett Detering was the winning pitcher going 4.1 allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs with 7 strikeouts.  Cody Beard worked the final 2.2 innings.
 
High School Softball:
The Salem Lady Cats improved to 4-0 on the season with a home win over Effingham 12-3.  Makenna Smith hit her first home run of the season and also picked up the win in the circle.  Lilly Blagoue and Lauren Burge drove in 2 runs each.  Jaelyn Keller picked up her first varsity hit.
The OPS Lady Eagles moved to 4-0 with a 12-4 win over Breese Central.  The Eagles offense was lead by Trista Moore collecting 3 hits, Hailey Lane had 2 hits including a homerun, Kenzie Wilkerson, Lauren Robb, Macey Spicer also added 2 hits a piece, while Rheagan Rollinson and Madie Garrett had 1 hit.  Macey Spicer went 7 innings to pick up the win.  They will play at St Elmo/Brownstown today weather permitting.
