Carlyle sophomore Tyson Waughtel won his 2nd state championship as he brought home the 1a 113 pound title with his major decision victory in the finals. He finishes the season at 54-1. Also in 1a at 120, Harrisburg’s Tony Keene finished 4th. Vandalia freshman Dillon Hinton finished off his first year with a major decision win to take 5th at 132 pounds. Dakota’s Phoenix Blakely made it a perfect 4 for 4 in state championships with his title at 132. Benton’s Mason Tieffel is the state champ at 138 pounds with his decision win. Vandalia’s Owen Miller finished 4th. At 145, Herrin’s Blue Bishop was 4th. At 160, Vandalia’s Eric McKinney was 4th.
In 2a finals, Morgan Turner of Bremen made history as the freshman became the first female to medal at the boys state finals winning her 3rd place match over Civic Memorial’s Bradley Ruckman to pull off the historic feat at 106 pounds. At 126, Triad’s Colby Crouch was 2nd and Caleb Scott of Civic Memorial finished 5th. At 132, Mascoutah’s Santino Robinson finished the season at 45-0 with his championship victory. At 138, Mattoon’s Ben Capitosti was 6th. At 145, Civic Memorial’s Bryce Griffin was 2nd and Mattoon’s Aidan Blackburn was 4th. At 170, Civic Memorial’s Abe Wojckiewicz won the state title and Carbondale’s Brenden Benz was 6th. At 182, Triad’s Koen Rodebush was 6th. At 220, Leo Meyer of Mattoon was 5th.
