New roof being installed at Bryan Bennett Library in Salem.

The Bryan Bennett Library in Salem is having new roofing and HVAC installed.

Librarian Kim Keller says Joiner Sheet Metal and Roofing of Highland is replacing the roof over two-thirds of the library at a cost of $179,881 plus architectural and contingency fees.   The project is expected to be completed this week.

The existing ‘robber’ roof system is being replaced and additional insulation being added to increase energy efficiency and meet current building codes.

The library also had two new heating and air conditioning units installed by Booher Tin Shop in Salem in October.  They cost $20,885 and replaced 20-year-old units.  A total of ten units that are more than 20 years old will eventually be replaced.

In October, Mother Nature expedited the next phase of the HVAC replacement project when a bird’s nest caught fire in one of the other HVAC units.   At the library board’s November meeting, a bid was awarded to Booher’s Tin Shop to replace the unit damaged in the fire at a cost of $12,965.

The Library Board of Trustees will be able to complete all the work with the money that had been set aside in anticipation of the roof, HVAC replacements and other building maintenance needs.

In December 202, a Joiner crew replaced the other one-third of the library’s roof.
