Two Salem juvenile girls were airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis for treatment after the side-by-side they were operating went out of control and crashed in the 2500 block of Farthing Road in rural Odin early Sunday afternoon.
Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says the two told first responders they were traveling 30 to 40 miles an hour down Farthing Road when the wheels began wobbling and the vehicle flipped on its side and ejected them.
The girls, ages 13 and 14, were sitting along the road when emergency help arrived. Air Evac was called and landed two helicopters in a nearby cut soybean field to transport them to St. Louis. Smith says the two did not appear to be seriously injured and being taken to St. Louis was a precaution.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is handling the crash, but reports have not been completed.
The crash was reported at 1:04 Sunday afternoon.
