The state’s tax holiday on school supplies begins Friday.  For 10 straight days the state’s sales tax will drop from 6.25% to 1.25%.  Governor JB Pritzker says that should ease a little of the cost.

“Whether it’s bookbags, calculators, writing tablets, notebooks, binders, folders, clothing and footwear….if our students need it for school, it’s covered by this tax cut.”

Priztker says this also applies to teachers spending their own money to purchase classroom supplies.

“Educators will also be able to take advantage of this sales tax holiday with a tax credit for school supplies of up to $250 in 2022 and $500 in 2023.”

The holiday only applies to the state sales tax, not any local sales taxes.  It runs through August 14.
