The Salem Police Department has set the bicycle giveaway for unclaimed bicycles for Saturday, September 17th.
The event will be held from nine to noon at the Salem Police Department located at 201 South Rotan. Bikes will be given away on a first-come, first serve basis. The event will end when all bikes are given away or at noon, whichever comes first.
The notice of the event is being given early so the public can check with the police department to determine whether their bicycle is in the police department’s possession. Proof of ownership will be required, at minimum, a physical description of the bicycle and an approximate date of when it was stolen or noticed missing. If a serial number can be provided, that would serve as the best proof of ownership.
Due to the length of time the police department has been in possession of the bicycles and this notice, claims of ownership after the bicycle giveaway event will not be accepted.
The city council passed an ordinance on Monday allowing the police department to hold the giveaway. The Police Department notes many of the bicycles are in good or fair shape, some are in need of minor repair and a few would likely only be good for parts.
Donations to the Salem Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #333 for the Shop-with-a-Cop program will be accepted at the event. However, donations are not required to obtain a bicycle.
