Two Clay City residents were killed and three others were injured Friday afternoon when a van made a left-hand turn in front of a semi at the intersection of US 45 and Wayne County Road 2200 north.
State Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the van driven by 22-year-old Olivia Flexter of Clay City was traveling south on US 45 when it pulled in front of the semi driven by 29-year-old Patrick Gaboury of Clinton, Iowa.
After the impact, the van left the roadway to the east and struck a tree.
Two passengers in Flexter’s van died as a result of the crash. They are identified as 61-year-old Evelyn Flexter of Clay City and an eight-year-old female from Clay City. The driver of the van, Olivia Flexter, along with two other passengers, a three-year-old male, and a four-year-old female, was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi was not injured.
The driver of the van was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way.
The crash was reported at 3:30 Friday afternoon. It remains under investigation.
