David M. Decker, age 75, of Iuka, Illinois, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

David was born on May 4, 1951, in Salem, Illinois, the son of Lawrence L. Decker and Elsie Irene (Smith) Decker.

On August 19, 1972, David married Susan Holsapple in Salem, Illinois, and together they shared 54 years of marriage.

David spent his working career with the Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked as an engineer. He dedicated 43 years to the railroad before retiring in 2012. After so many years of hard work, retirement gave David more time to enjoy the things and people that meant the most to him.

An outdoorsman at heart, David was known as a legendary deer hunter and enjoyed fishing. Some of his greatest enjoyment came from watching his granddaughters play softball. He also treasured the simple routine of sharing morning coffee with his friends.

David was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Decker; two sons, Michael Decker and wife Jennifer of Salem and Anthony Decker and wife Lori of Iuka; grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia, and Wyatt Decker and Ashlyn Donoho; and brother-in-law, Ross Wetzel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Elsie Decker; and siblings, Gloria Wetzel, Donald Decker, James Decker, Wanda Small, Gene Decker, and Debbie Leuty.

A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem with Pastor Jim Chapman officiating.  Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Private burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
